RESET FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

A guided journey from old root systems into the fruit-bearing life of Jesus Christ: confess what produces death, receive the seed of redemption, and intentionally cultivate the Spirit’s fruit in its place.

“It is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20

Stage 01

Return to the Tree of Life

Begin where the human story begins: life with God, separation through disobedience, and redemption through Jesus Christ.

Genesis 2:9 • 3:22–24

Created for life with God

God planted the garden, placed humanity within it, and caused the tree of life to grow in its midst. After Adam’s disobedience, access to the tree of life was guarded.

This workbook uses the Tree of Life as a discipleship picture: mankind was never designed to flourish independently of God.

The Bible explicitly places the Tree of Life in Eden. Here, “root,” “branch,” “fruit,” and “canopy” are used as a formation framework for abiding in Christ and producing the fruit of the Spirit.

John 6:53–57 • John 15:4–5

Jesus becomes our life

Jesus calls His people into living union with Him. His language of eating His flesh and drinking His blood points to receiving and abiding in the life He gives; in John 15, He commands His disciples to remain in Him as branches in the vine.

Redemption is more than stopping bad fruit. It is receiving a new source of life.

RESET principle: We do not merely cut off an old behaviour. We surrender its root and cultivate a Spirit-led replacement.
Galatians 2:20

The governing confession

“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.”

Stage 02

Receive the Seed Again

A deliberate prayer of repentance, faith and renewed surrender.

Prayer of Return

Jesus Christ, I come back under Your Lordship. Forgive me for the ways I have lived according to my own understanding and made choices without You. I believe You died for my sin and rose again. I receive Your mercy, Your righteousness and Your life.

Come and rule in the heart of me. Holy Spirit, fill me and expose every root that does not produce the life of Jesus. Give me courage to confess it, wisdom to replace it, and strength to practise obedience. Let the fruit of Your Spirit grow until my life visibly belongs to Jesus. Amen.

What repentance means here

Repentance is a changed mind that produces a changed direction. Confession names what has been wrong. Surrender releases our claim to keep it. Obedience creates new pathways.

Care safeguard: This workbook is for Christian spiritual formation. It is not a substitute for medical, psychiatric, addiction, trauma or safeguarding care. If a pattern involves physical dependence on alcohol/drugs, self-harm, abuse, severe eating problems, or danger to yourself/others, involve an appropriate licensed professional or emergency service as well as trusted pastoral support. Do not abruptly stop a substance when medical withdrawal could be dangerous.
Stage 03

Name the Old Root

Galatians calls the works of the flesh “obvious.” Freedom starts with truthful naming, not hiding.

Galatians 5:19–21

“Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these...”

The workbook also includes modern patterns that may express disordered desire, avoidance, compulsion or lack of self-control. These practical examples are not presented as a second biblical list.

2. Confess without hiding

Stage 04

Choose the New Root

The Holy Spirit does not leave the soil empty. We cultivate what He produces.

Galatians 5:22–23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

The replacement language below is a practical discipleship aid. Galatians gives the fruit; the suggested “replaces” language helps the delegate turn that fruit into a concrete obedience goal.

Suggested root: Choose an old pattern above and this workbook will recommend one or more fruits to cultivate.
Stage 05

Plant the Replacement

Do not only say what you will stop. Decide what righteousness will look like when the trigger returns.

Your RESET instruction

The replacement test

Alex’s BMX reset — the model

Your story demonstrates a key principle of this workbook. The reset was not only, “stop drinking, stop searching for affirmation, stop overworking.” In repentance, you received a constructive replacement: return to BMX, something God already knew was connected to rest, joy, identity, health, community and ultimately mission.

A righteous replacement can begin as personal restoration and later become a channel of contribution.

Stage 06

Reorder the Human Need

A sinful pattern often promises to meet a legitimate need in an unrighteous way. Bring the need itself under Jesus.

Six needs under Lordship

Certainty
Security becomes trust in God, faithful rhythms and wise stewardship.
Variety
Change becomes healthy adventure, creativity, learning and Spirit-led courage.
Significance
Worth becomes identity in Christ and meaningful responsibility, not attention addiction.
Love & connection
Intimacy becomes truthful relationship, covenant, service and belonging.
Growth
Development becomes discipleship, wisdom, skill and increasing Christlikeness.
Contribution
Purpose becomes fruit that serves people and displays the goodness of Jesus.

The Beatitudes as kingdom posture

These are not a clinical hierarchy of needs. They are kingdom attitudes that reshape how we pursue life with God and people.

1
Poor in spirit
I begin dependent, not self-sufficient.
2
Those who mourn
I allow holy grief to name what sin has cost.
3
The gentle
Strength becomes surrendered, not controlling.
4
Hunger and thirst for righteousness
Desire is retrained toward what God calls good.
5
The merciful
Received mercy becomes mercy given.
6
Pure in heart
Private motives are brought into the light.
7
Peacemakers
I build reconciliation rather than strife.
8
Persecuted for righteousness
I choose faithfulness even when obedience costs me.

Stage 08

Track the Fruit

The question is not only, “Did I avoid the old root?” Ask, “What fruit did obedience produce today?”

Stage 09

Become a Canopy of Holy Fire

Personal righteousness is not meant to terminate on the self. Healthy fruit becomes shelter, healing, witness and contribution.

Revelation 22:2

“In the middle of its street and on this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

From root to nation

The picture of a canopy reminds the delegate that inward transformation should become outward blessing: healthier family life, truthful work, generosity, courage, witness, service, reconciliation and contribution.

My contribution

Final declaration

I belong to Jesus Christ. I will not feed the roots that produced death in me. By the Holy Spirit I will cultivate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. My heart is surrendered soil. My choices will become righteous roots. My habits will become branches. My life will bear fruit. And the fruit will become a blessing beyond me.
